Description

Hamburger Steak with Onions and Gravy is a comforting, classic dish featuring juicy beef patties topped with rich gravy and tender onions. It’s simple to prepare, doesn’t require complicated ingredients, and is perfect for both busy weeknights and weekend family meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly.
  2. Form the mixture into 4-6 evenly sized patties.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and brown the patties on both sides (about 3-4 minutes per side).
  4. Remove patties and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onions and sprinkle flour over them. Cook for about 1 minute.
  6. Gradually pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce while stirring. Add the dried thyme.
  7. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  8. Return the patties to the skillet and cook until they are fully cooked through with no pink remaining.
  9. Serve hot with the onion gravy poured over the patties.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef for a healthier option.
  • Add your favorite spices to the meat mixture for extra flavor.
  • For thicker gravy, add more flour to the onions when cooking.
  • You can add mushrooms to the gravy for deeper flavor.
  • Ground turkey or plant-based meat substitutes can be used instead of beef.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.
  • Fresh bread is great for soaking up the gravy.
